Her name is Alba, means white in Latin . Alba was rescue on 29 of April 2017 in Tanggirang village in Kapuas hulu, Central Kalimantan. She was saved from the villager who had been keeping her in the cage in a poor condition. She was stressed, dehydrated, weak, suffering from a parasite infection and displaying a poor appetite. During her first few days at Orangutan Reintroduction Centre at Nyaru Menteng, she would only eat sugarcane. This very rare orangutan was placed within 24hours veterinary team in a dimly lit enclosed quarantine facility due to her sensitivity to sunlight.
Concern with her rare and unique condition, BOS Foundation is now carefully collecting information about albinism in great apes before be able to decide on the best possible actions for her future welfare.
By the end of June, Alba will be start her new life on a 10-hectare Forest-Island home. Like humans, all orangutans are unique individuals. Soon, Alba will be moved to a special man-made island that encompasses 10 hectares of natural habitat, so she can live life freedom, while remaining protected from human threats. Even though Alba has good experience living in the wild-a trait that would usually mean she could be translocated quickly without lengthy rehabilitation process- her albinism-namely the lack of the pigment, melanin, in her hair and skin – can lead to health complications, such as poor eyesight, poor hearing, and skin cancer, and make her more vulnerable to hunting or predation.
Alba during stay will be accompanied with other new forest-island home by three other orangutans, their name are; Radmala (female, aged 4yrs) Kika (female, aged 6yrs) and unyu (male, aged 4yrs) all of whom have been introduced to Alba and they have been bonded well together.
Once on the island, Alba and the others will have full-time monitoring and security provide and additionally will record which orangutans are seen at the feeding platform, where supplementary foods are provided twice a day.
